In a significant move to enhance the ease of doing business, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued new instructions aimed at simplifying the Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration process. This initiative seeks to alleviate the compliance burden on taxpayers and ensure a more transparent and efficient registration system.
Strict Adherence to Prescribed Documentation: GST officers are now mandated to request only the documents specified in the registration application form. This measure is intended to prevent unnecessary delays caused by demands for additional, non-essential documents.
Approval for Additional Document Requests: In instances where documents beyond the prescribed list are deemed necessary, officers must obtain prior approval from the concerned Deputy or Assistant Commissioner. This step ensures accountability and prevents arbitrary demands.
Monitoring and Accountability: Senior field officers have been instructed to closely monitor the processing of registration applications, including physical verifications and the nature of queries raised. Any deviation from the prescribed guidelines may result in strict action against the concerned officers.
Adequate Staffing for Timely Processing: To ensure prompt handling of registration applications, officers have been advised to allocate sufficient staff for this purpose.
This directive is a welcome relief for businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), that often face challenges during the GST registration process. By curbing unnecessary documentation requirements and promoting transparency, the CBIC aims to foster a more business-friendly environment.
